A message from the Bishop of the Diocese of Covington:

October 29, 2009

My Dear Friends in Christ:

We are at a critical juncture in the national health care debate. Therefore, I and the other diocesan leaders in Kentucky - two bishops and the diocesan administrator in the Diocese of Owensboro - have sent materials to all pastors in the Commonwealth and asked that they bring these urgent matters to the immediate attention of their parishioners.

Blessed Pope John XXIII included medical care as a human right in his 1963 encyclical, Pacem in Terris. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops supports healthcare as basic human right and has called for national health care reform for decades.

The national health care reform legislation currently being debated in the U. S. Congress does not meet the bishops’ principles and priorities that health care should protect life, protect the consciences of health care providers, not expand abortion with public funding or insurance mandates and provide access for all with a special concern for the poor and inclusion of legal immigrants.

Below are links to the USCCB’s website where you can find additional information about health care reform and a link to where you can send pertinent and succinct messages to Kentucky’s U.S. Senators and Representatives.

May God bless you abundantly for your efforts in defense of life and your actions in solidarity with fellow Catholics across the Commonweath of Kentucky and the United States.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Rev. Roger J. Foys, D.D.
Bishop of Covington
